Research

Experimental high-energy physics at particle accelerators; research work in the framework of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC, CERN) and development of new detector technologies. The main focus of the experimental work lies on the development and operation of trigger systems, the analysis of ATLAS data and the conception of new, high-granular calorimeters for future accelerator experiments, e.g. at the International Linear Collider (CALICE, ILC). Concerning the analysis of LHC data the HEP group at the Kirchhoff-Institute works on the measurement of Standard Modell processes (e.g. jet cross sections, 3-boson final states) and the search for new phenomena beyond the Standard Modell of particle physics (e.g. extra dimensions, mini black holes, supersymmetry). The research work concerning detector R&D focuses on the application of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) for the readout of light produced by scintillating detectors; in this context the application of SiPMs for medical imaging technics is also investigated (EndoTOFPET US, PicoSec).
