- Postdoc positions on optimized quantum hardware for energy markets (m/w/d)

In the context of the recently approved EnerQuant project on ‘Modelling energy markets with quantum algorithms’ we are looking for excellent postdocs (experiment and theory).

A good understanding of efficient energy markets is at the heart of sustainable economies. However, the rise of renewable energy increases the number of local players dramatically and sometimes makes them fully probabilistic. Their interplay is typically mathematically modeled through NP-complete optimization problems, the solution of which on classical devices is an extremely challenging task. This project aims at designing solution methods for these problems using adiabatic quantum optimization, for which a novel framework in a cold atomic system will be developed, which will be benchmarked against competing platforms such as superconducting qubits. The project is carried out within an interdisciplinary and international environment, involving partners from academia and industry.

- One position will have a focus on the development of cold atom systems and is therefore experimentally oriented. The position will be embedded in the research activities of the Jendrzejewski group at Heidelberg University.
- A second position will have the focus on the development of a theoretical framework for the implementation of optimization algorithms on quantum hardware, mostly cold atom architectures. This will happen in close collaboration between the Jendrzejewski group and the Hauke group at the INO-CNR BEC Center, Trento.

Requirements for the hardware position:

- The candidate should have finished the PhD in the field of quantum technologies (cold atoms, trapped ions, photonic circuits).
- The candidate should be familiar with AMO technologies which are commonly encountered in cold atom experiments.
- Proven interest in the design of quantum simulation methods.
- The interdisciplinary nature of the project requires a high level of independence.

Requirements for the theory position:

- The candidate should have finished the PhD in the field of quantum information theory (quantum computing, quantum simulation, quantum annealing).
- The candidate should be familiar with AMO quantum technologies.
- Proven interest in the design of adiabatic quantum optimization methods.
- The interdisciplinary nature of the project requires a high level of independence.
