| Abstract (en) | Liquid crystal spatial light modulators (LCoS SLMs) are a widely used tool for holographic beam shaping and the generation of neutral atom optical traps. This thesis investigates methods for generating and optimizing such optical traps, as well as the suitability of an LCoS SLM for the RuPo experiment, where it is intended for the realization of an Unruh-DeWitt detector. The fundamentals of optical trapping are introduced using a focused Gaussian beam as an example, followed by a description of the operating principle of an LCoS SLM. Methods for generating holograms with and without the Gerchberg-Saxton phase retrieval algorithm are demonstrated. An optical setup is implemented to characterize the different methods of hologram generation and creation of optical tweezers. Using this setup, arrays containing up to 169 individual traps, as well as a variety of other trap geometries, are generated. The trap arrays are successfully optimized to minimize relative intensity deviations between individual tweezers to as low as 1% for a 5×5 quadratic grid. Finally, the response time of the LCoS SLM is estimated and found to be insufficient for the temporal resolution required by the RuPo experiment. Therefore, the investigated LCoS SLM is found to be suited for the creating of static tweezers arrays but not for the intended application, as in the realization of the Unruh–DeWitt detector. |
