Experimental particle physics; research work in the framework of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC, CERN) and development of new detector technologies. The main focus of the experimental work is on the development and operation of trigger and data acquisition systems, the analysis of ATLAS data and the conception of novel detector systems for future particle physics experiments. Concerning the analysis of LHC data the HEP group at the Kirchhoff-Institute works on the measurement of rare processes and the search for new phenomena beyond the Standard Modell; special emphasis is on searches for the production of dark matter candidates at the LHC. The research work concerning detector R&D focuses on the application of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) for the readout of light produced by scintillating detectors. In this context the application of SiPMs is investigated concerning both particle physics experiments (CALICE, Mu3e) and medical imaging applications (EndoTOFPET US); recently the group has also started development work on SiPMs for potential use in the DARWIN experiment to directly search for dark matter.
