Minutes of the Beetle strategy meeting, Heidelberg, 31. May 2001 ================================================================ Present: ======== Niels van Bakel Martin van Beuzekom Eddy Jans Hans Verkooijen Nigel Smale Daniel Baumeister Martin Feuerstack-Raible Sven Loechner Michael Schmelling Ulrich Trunk (Noise) Measurements with BeetleCO10 (MvB) ========================================== Noise measurements with the BeetleCO10 resulted in ENC=790e+17.5e/pF which contradicts the measurements in E. Sexauer's thesis (ENC=409e+38e/pF) and is lower than the theoretical lower limit of 20.9..25.6e/pF (depending on the excess noise factor). However, for the measurements on the CO10 no gain calibration for Cp>0 was performed. --> "Raw Data" of E.S. reqired for comparison (->HD) --> Further measurements on the CO10 have to be done (->NIKHEF) Pulse Shapes of BeetleFE10 and BeetleCO10 (NvB) =============================================== Some "fast shaping" settings with t(0..100%)<25ns were found. The results are in good agreement with simulation. It was argued that neither the "Pulse&R" nor the "Step&C" circuits used to emulate a Si-detector would generate the correct signals. Presently a BeetleCO10 attached to a Si-detector is irradiated with a 106Ru source. A VELO beamtest with Beetle11 chips is prepared for 15..23.10.2001. --> A probecard is needed to test the chips --> Chips will be bonded test PCBs that are also used by NIKHEF - only leave the input pads untouched. --> A decision about the setup has to be made: Integration in the LHCb testbeam setup or standalone DAQ? New Frontends: BeetleFE11 (SL) & BeetleFE12 (UT) ================================================ BeetleFE11: 10 new NMOS frontend channels, differing in feedback (5 variants) and bias network (2 variants) are integrated. Main goal besides a faster shaping wrt. Beetle10 was to avoid saturation of the preamp due to huge feedback resistances. BeetleFE12: 9 new PMOS frontend channels, derived from BeetleFE10's Set2 by increasing the speed of the preamplifier and shaper core. The variants include 4 different input transistors of the preamp and three different feedback capacitances of the shaper. Besides faster shaping the main goal was to achieve noise values similar to that of the NMOS frontend (27e/pF). Furthermore a variant of the NMOS frontend with an NMOS feedback transistor (W/L=4.2um/0.79uM*256) was implemented to prove that the saturation problem can be overcome this way. SEU-robust logic: BeetleSR10 (DB) ================================= The chip implements two versions of the I2C interface, one is the std. implementation, while the other uses triple redundaant flipflops to avoid SEU failures. Furthermore two memory blocks (34*8bit) are implemented. --> active (hamming code) correction has to be implemented for the bias registers and is not present on this chip. Project schedule (MFR) ====================== 28.02.2001 Submission of Beetle11 21.05.2001 Submission of BeetleFE11, BeetleFE12 and BeetleSR10 30.05.2001 Beetle11 expected back 15.06.2001 " " " (more realistic) --> Bond to test PCB (setup from Beetle10 already available) --> NIKHEF: 2 good chips reqired --> HD: " " " " --> OX: 2 bare dies --> approx two month time for testing the chips +-----------------------------------------------------------------+ | Detailed measurements program must be elaborated until june 15. | +-----------------------------------------------------------------+ --> Beetle1.1 must be bonded to a detector and test for any problems occuring by using the LVDS comparator outputs asap 08.2001/09.2001 FE/SR chips expected back --> Studies on shaping, noise and irradiation Spring2002 Earliest date for submission of Beetle12 & Beetle13, which has to include the final FE(s) and SEU-robust logic circuits Summer 2002 Prepare for engineering run of Beetle12 or Beetle13.
