Tutorials

To be discussed at:

25.04.2012: Fermi surface of nickel

09.05.2012: Photoemission data on Ni

  • The manuscript to be discussed: Nakajima et al., 2004
  • Supporting information: Early similar data which had been shown in the lecture: Guillot et al., 1977. These early results are covered by the data in Nakajima's pubilcation.
  • Recommended literature: E.g., P.A. Cox, Transition metal oxides, Oxford (reprint 2011)

23.05.2012: Filling-controlled Metal-insulator transition

  • Manuscript to be discussed: Yoshida2002
  • Supporting information: Experimental Zaanen-Sawatki-Allen schema: Boquet1996 (see fig. 15)
  • Hints: Why the O:2p and Ti PES peaks both change upon doping? Why the coherent peak at EF evolves? What one can extract from low-temperature specific heat data? How the band-width and effective mass are connected?

6.5.2012: Spin-charge separation

20.6.2012: Resonant x-ray scattering

4.7.2012: Peierls transition

Questions to be addressed in each tutorial session:

  1. Which experiment has been done? What is the experimental set-up, how does it work?
  2. What can be learnt from this experiment in general? How do the results look like in general, let's say on the textbook-level?
  3. What are the results in this particular case?
  4. How to analyze/interpret the results?
  5. What can be extracted for the general understanding of this material?
  6. Any other related question which you may find interesting.
